THEORY

Practical Theory - Who Needs It Anyway? Darren Hamilton This generation has witnessed a growing number of musicians who have learned how to play their instrument solely by ear. Many musicians today are filled with dread when they think about the six letter word “theory”. Several great musicians of our time have achieved success with very little or no theory background at all. So the question is often asked, “Who needs theory anyway?” As musicians who are called to “play skillfully”, music theory plays an important role in our overall musicianship. Understanding basic music theory concepts helps musicians to communicate more effectively and efficiently with other musicians in band settings. Music theory also provides musicians with the insight to make musical decisions when composing or arranging music. In this practical theory session, be prepared to learn some basic music theory concepts and how to apply their use in your rehearsal routines, musical arrangements and overall musicianship development. |
